How We Design our Programmes
We are committed to understanding not just whether our programmes work, but how they improve people’s lives. Across all our services, we combine validated psychological measures with participant feedback to capture both measurable outcomes and real-world change.

Participant feedback also plays a central role in shaping the ongoing development of our programmes, ensuring they continue to evolve in response to what works best for the people we support.
Every course we offer begins with a clear reason for being. We respond to real needs raised by older adults, advisors, and health partners, and then develop the course carefully using research and evaluation.
Responding to a Real Need
Each course starts because a need has been identified. This may come from: - Participants or older adults telling us what support they are looking for - Our advisory board highlighting a gap in existing services - Requests from NHS commissioners or partner organisations This ensures the course is relevant, timely, and rooted in real-life concerns.
Grounded in Research Evidence
Once a need is identified, we review high-quality research studies and systematic reviews to guide how the course is developed. This helps us: - Identify what the mechanisms of change are - Understand how strong the research evidence is - Understand how participants have experienced similar courses
Checking the Idea in Real Life
Before developing the course further, we consider whether it will work in practice. We ask: - Is this realistic and manageable for participants? - Is it affordable and accessible? - Does it clearly address the identified need? This stage helps us decide whether the course should move forward.
Designed for our Community
We then adapt the course so it works for the people taking part. This includes: - Designing specifically for adults aged 65 and over - Reviewing accessibility, clarity, and pace - Ensuring the online format is easy to use This step helps translate research into everyday experience.
Developing the Programme
Once the approach is clear, we build the course itself. This involves: - Writing session content - Designing practices and exercises - Creating slides, handouts, and videos - Developing guidance to support progress over time
Delivery
We then offer the course to a group and carefully evaluate it. We look at: - Engagement and attendance - Learning and understanding - Changes in wellbeing and daily habits - Participant feedback and experiences This helps us understand what is working and what needs refining.
Reflecting, Improving and Refining
Finally, we use everything we’ve learned to improve the course. We might make changes such as to: - Clarify anything that felt confusing - Remove elements that were less helpful - Add what participants told us they needed - Adjust the pace and structure where needed This ongoing process helps us offer courses that are responsive, evidence-based, and genuinely supportive.
